About Oblong Face Shape
The free face shape detection tool and styling guide trusted by 51,000+ people. Built by face shape specialists, grounded in facial geometry research, and designed for everyone.
Our Mission
One problem, solved completely. Most people have no accurate way to identify their face shape. They guess from blurry descriptions, inconsistent quizzes, or unreliable apps — and end up with the wrong hairstyle, the wrong glasses, and zero confidence in their styling choices.
OblongFaceShape.com exists to fix that with a single free tool and the most comprehensive face shape guide available. No sign-up. No subscriptions. No paywalls. Just accurate, expert-backed results.
We cover all six face shapes — oblong, oval, round, square, heart, and diamond — with gender-specific hairstyle, glasses, sunglasses, and beard recommendations grounded in professional styling practice.
What We Build
Free Face Shape Calculator
Our flagship tool detects face shapes using three methods: manual measurements (in cm or inches), AI photo analysis, and live selfie camera. All three run entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server, no photo is stored.
Expert Styling Guides
Every guide on oblongfaceshape.com is structured around a specific question: what hairstyle, what glasses, what beard style, what makeup technique — for your specific shape and gender. We don’t publish generic lists. We publish evidence-backed, specific recommendations backed by professional practice.
Facial Geometry Education
Our ratio reference tables, measurement guides, and celebrity shape analyses are used by stylists, optometrists, and beauty professionals who find our methodology — based on Farkas (1994) facial anthropometry and our own dataset of 51,000+ calculations — more precise than most commercial tools.
Our Methodology
Face shape detection at OblongFaceShape.com uses a Gaussian-scored ratio analysis system across four measurements: forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width, and face length. The algorithm calculates:
Length-to-Width Ratio
Face Length ÷ Average Width (where Average Width = (Forehead + Cheekbones + Jaw) ÷ 3). The primary diagnostic signal for distinguishing oblong>, oval, and round shapes.
Width Consistency Score
Narrowest Width ÷ Widest Width × 100%. Oblong and square faces score ≥88%. Heart and diamond faces score below 75%. This is the key differentiator between visually similar shapes.
Golden Ratio Score
How closely the L/W ratio approaches 1.618 — the classical golden ratio associated with proportional harmony. This score is displayed alongside the shape result for reference.
Gaussian Probability Scoring
Each shape receives a probability score based on how closely the input measurements match ideal ratio distributions for that shape. The shape with the highest weighted score is returned as the primary result.
Methodological Basis
Our ratio thresholds are calibrated against facial anthropometry research (Farkas, Kolar & Munro, 1994 — Anthropometry of the Head and Face) and validated across 51,000+ user calculations. Styling recommendations are reviewed by professional hairstylists and optometrists with 10+ years of practice experience.
